Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)

Government-created or -owned information requiring safeguarding or dissemination controls under law, regulation, or policy, but not classified.

Definition

The CUI program was established by Executive Order 13556 and is implemented by 32 CFR Part 2002, with NARA maintaining the CUI Registry of categories. Defense contractors handling CUI must protect it under DFARS 252.204-7012 using NIST SP 800-171 and achieve the required CMMC level. CUI Specified categories carry additional handling requirements.

Example

Technical drawings for a military vehicle component marked CUI must be stored only in the contractor's assessed enclave.

Exam tip

CUI is not classified; FCI is broader and less sensitive than CUI.
