Equalization

Adjusting the level of specific frequency ranges in an audio signal to correct tonal balance or room problems.

Definition

Graphic EQs have fixed bands, often one-third octave, while parametric EQs allow adjustable center frequency, bandwidth (Q) and gain. High-pass and low-pass filters remove frequencies below or above a cutoff. EQ can reduce feedback-prone frequencies but cannot fix fundamentally poor acoustics or coverage.

Example

A parametric notch at 2.5 kHz with a narrow Q removes a ringing frequency before feedback.

Exam tip

Parametric EQ adjusts frequency, Q and gain; graphic EQ has fixed bands.
