Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC)

A vSphere cluster setting that masks CPU features so hosts with different CPU generations can vMotion VMs between them.

Definition

EVC sets a baseline CPU feature level (per vendor) for the cluster. Hosts must all be Intel or all be AMD; vMotion between Intel and AMD is not possible.

Example

Enabling an EVC baseline lets new hosts join a cluster with older CPUs.

Exam tip

EVC cannot enable vMotion between Intel and AMD hosts.
