Elasticity

Ability of a system to automatically add and remove resources in near real time to match fluctuating demand.

Definition

Elasticity is the dynamic, usually automated, adjustment of capacity in both directions as workload changes, so that customers pay only for what they need at any moment. It is implemented with auto scaling groups, serverless platforms and managed services that scale transparently.

Example

A ticketing site scales from 2 to 50 web servers when sales open and back to 2 an hour later.

Exam tip

Elasticity is short-term and bidirectional; scalability is the general capacity to handle growth.
