Edge-Routed Bridging (ERB)

An EVPN-VXLAN design in which inter-VXLAN routing (IRB gateways) is performed on the leaf switches.

Definition

ERB keeps routing at the edge, minimizing hairpinning and allowing lean spines that only route the underlay. Distributed anycast gateways on every leaf provide the same gateway IP and MAC everywhere. It is Juniper's recommended design for most modern fabrics.

Example

Traffic between VLAN 10 and VLAN 20 on the same leaf is routed locally without visiting the spine.

Exam tip

ERB routes at the leaf; CRB routes at the spine. ERB is preferred for east-west efficiency.
