Edge Computing

Processing data near where it is generated, such as on devices or local sites, instead of in a centralized cloud region.

Definition

Edge computing moves compute and storage closer to users and devices to reduce latency, bandwidth costs and dependency on connectivity. Cloud providers extend their platforms to the edge through offerings such as AWS Outposts, Wavelength, Azure IoT Edge and Google Distributed Cloud.

Example

A retail store analyzes camera feeds on a local server and only sends summarized events to the cloud.

Exam tip

Edge computing is chosen for latency, bandwidth or intermittent connectivity constraints, not for cost savings on core workloads.
