eBGP Multihop

A BGP option that raises the TTL of eBGP packets so peers need not be directly connected, such as loopback peering.

Definition

By default eBGP uses TTL 1. ebgp-multihop N sets the TTL to N, enabling loopback peering for load sharing across multiple links. disable-connected-check is an alternative for directly connected loopback peers. The TTL security feature (GTSM) is the inverse, requiring a high incoming TTL.

Example

neighbor 192.0.2.2 ebgp-multihop 2

Exam tip

eBGP between loopbacks needs ebgp-multihop, update-source and a route to the peer loopback.
