Dynamic IP Address

An IP address automatically assigned to a device, usually by DHCP, for a limited lease period.

Definition

Dynamic addressing reduces administrative effort and configuration errors and lets addresses be reused as devices come and go. The address can change when the lease expires and the client gets a different one. ISPs often assign dynamic public addresses to residential customers.

Example

A laptop receives 10.0.5.143 from the office DHCP server each morning.

Exam tip

Dynamic does not mean random; DHCP usually tries to renew the same address.
