Dual-Band Access Point

An AP with radios operating simultaneously in two bands, typically 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

Definition

Dual-band APs serve legacy 2.4 GHz clients and higher-capacity 5 GHz clients at the same time. Tri-band APs add a 6 GHz or second 5 GHz radio, and some APs have software-defined (XOR) radios that can change bands. Dual-band clients choose a band, influenced by band steering.

Exam tip

Dual-band concurrent means both radios operate at once; selectable dual-band uses one at a time.
