Domain Join

Adding a computer to an Active Directory domain so it trusts the domain for authentication and receives Group Policy.

Definition

Joining creates a computer account in AD and establishes a secure channel with a domain controller. It requires DNS that can locate DCs via SRV records and an account with join rights.

Example

Add-Computer -DomainName corp.local -OUPath 'OU=Servers,DC=corp,DC=local' -Restart joins a server.

Exam tip

Domain join failures usually stem from the client using a DNS server that cannot resolve the domain's SRV records.
