Dependency Confusion

A supply chain risk in which a package manager installs a malicious public package instead of an internal private package with the same name.

Definition

When builds check both private and public registries, a higher version number in the public registry may win. Mitigations include scoped or namespaced packages, configuring a single internal proxy registry, pinning versions with hashes, and registering internal names publicly as placeholders.

Example

An internal package named acme-utils is shadowed by a public package of the same name with a higher version.

Exam tip

Fix with namespaces/scopes and a single trusted registry source.
