Delphi Technique

Structured, anonymous, iterative method for reaching expert consensus, often used in qualitative risk analysis.

Definition

In the Delphi technique, experts provide anonymous estimates or opinions, a facilitator summarizes them, and experts revise their views over several rounds until consensus emerges. Anonymity reduces groupthink and the influence of dominant personalities. It is useful when data for quantitative analysis is lacking.

Example

Five engineers anonymously estimate the likelihood of a data center outage over three rounds.

Exam tip

Anonymity is the key differentiator from a regular brainstorming session.
