Default-Information Originate

A command that makes OSPF (or other protocols) advertise a default route into the routing domain.

Definition

In OSPF the router generates a Type 5 0.0.0.0/0 LSA only if it already has a default route, unless the always keyword is used. In IS-IS and BGP similar commands exist (default-information originate, default-originate per neighbor).

Example

default-information originate always metric 10 metric-type 1

Exam tip

Without always, OSPF will not originate a default unless one exists in the RIB.
