Deconfliction

The process of distinguishing authorized testing activity from a real attack when defenders detect suspicious behavior.

Definition

During an engagement the SOC may spot testing activity; deconfliction lets a trusted point of contact confirm whether it is the testers or a genuine intrusion. Testers keep detailed activity logs with source IPs and timestamps for this purpose. It prevents wasted incident response effort and ensures real attacks are not ignored.

Example

The SOC sees a scan from 203.0.113.50 and calls the white team, who confirm it is the red team's IP.

Exam tip

Detailed tester logs and pre-shared source IPs are what make deconfliction possible.
