Red Team

A group that emulates real adversaries to test an organization's detection and response capabilities.

Definition

Red teams conduct objective-based, often stealthy operations using realistic TTPs over extended periods, testing people, processes and technology. They differ from penetration tests, which focus on finding as many vulnerabilities as possible within scope. Findings improve blue team defenses.

Example

A red team gaining domain admin through phishing and testing whether the SOC detects lateral movement.

Exam tip

Red = attack, blue = defend, purple = collaborate, white = referee/rules.
