Database Schema

The structure of a database (its tables, columns, types, keys and relationships), or a named namespace that groups database objects.

Definition

Schema has two common meanings. It can mean the overall design or blueprint of a database. In SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Snowflake and others, it is also a container inside a database that groups tables, views and other objects for organization and permissions.

Example

In Snowflake, SALES_DB.RAW.ORDERS refers to the ORDERS table in the RAW schema of SALES_DB.

Exam tip

Snowflake and Databricks Unity Catalog both use three-part names: database (or catalog).schema.object.
