Data Sovereignty

Principle that data is subject to the laws and governance of the country in which it is collected or stored.

Definition

Data sovereignty means digital data is governed by the legal jurisdiction where it resides or where its subjects live, which can include government access rights and privacy requirements. It drives choices of cloud region, provider and sovereign cloud offerings.

Example

A Canadian agency stores citizen data only in Canadian regions to keep it under Canadian law.

Exam tip

Sovereignty is about which laws apply; residency is about where data physically sits. Questions may test this distinction.
