Data Residency

Requirement or choice that data be stored and processed in a specific geographic location.

Definition

Data residency refers to the physical or geographic location of an organization's data, often driven by regulation, contracts or policy. Cloud customers meet residency requirements by selecting regions and restricting replication and backup destinations, sometimes enforced with policies such as allowed-locations rules.

Example

An Azure Policy denies creation of resources outside the West Europe and North Europe regions.

Exam tip

Use location-restricting policies (Azure Policy, SCPs, Google organization policy resource locations) to enforce residency in exam scenarios.
