Data Blending

A Tableau technique that combines data from separate data sources at the aggregate level of the view, linked on common dimensions.

Definition

Blending uses a primary source (all values kept) and secondary sources (matching aggregated values only), acting like a left join after aggregation. Linking fields are shown with an orange chain icon. Relationships have largely replaced blending, except across published data sources.

Exam tip

Blending happens per worksheet after aggregation; non-additive aggregates like COUNTD from the secondary source aren't supported.
