Credentialed Scan

A vulnerability scan that logs in to targets with valid credentials to assess installed software and configurations accurately.

Definition

Authenticated scans read registry entries, package lists and configuration files, producing more complete results with fewer false positives than non-credentialed scans. Scanner service accounts should have least privilege needed and be protected. They show the insider's view of vulnerabilities.

Example

Configuring a Nessus scan with a domain account to check patch levels on Windows servers.

Exam tip

Credentialed scans give the most accurate results and fewer false positives.
