Cosmos DB Consistency Levels

Five Azure Cosmos DB consistency models: strong, bounded staleness, session, consistent prefix and eventual.

Definition

Strong guarantees linearizable reads; bounded staleness lags by a bounded number of versions or time; session (the default) guarantees read-your-own-writes within a session; consistent prefix ensures reads never see out-of-order writes; eventual provides no ordering guarantee but the lowest latency and cost. Stronger levels increase latency and RU cost.

Example

A shopping cart uses session consistency so each user always sees their own latest changes.

Exam tip

Session is the default and most widely used level; strong is not available with multi-region writes.
