Cloud Computing

Delivery of on-demand computing resources such as servers, storage, databases and software over a network with pay-as-you-go pricing.

Definition

Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort. NIST SP 800-145 defines it through five essential characteristics, three service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) and four deployment models (public, private, community, hybrid).

Example

A startup launches its web app on rented virtual servers in a public cloud region instead of buying hardware for a data center.

Exam tip

Expect questions that test the five NIST characteristics; on-demand self-service and rapid elasticity are the most commonly cited distinguishing traits.
