Routing & Switching · Foundational

Connected Route

A route automatically installed for the subnet of an interface that is up/up and has an IP address.

Definition

Cisco IOS installs a connected route (code C) for each interface subnet and, since IOS 15, a local /32 host route (code L) for the interface address itself. Connected routes have AD 0 and are always preferred over other sources for the same prefix. Junos calls these direct and local routes.

Example

Configuring 10.1.1.1/24 on Gi0/0 creates C 10.1.1.0/24 and L 10.1.1.1/32.

Exam tip

A connected route disappears if the interface goes down, which also withdraws any dependent static routes.
