Clustering

An unsupervised task that groups similar data points together so items in a cluster are more alike than items in other clusters.

Definition

Clustering algorithms such as k-means, DBSCAN and hierarchical clustering partition data based on distance or density. No labels are required, and the number or meaning of clusters is often interpreted by humans afterward. It is widely used for customer segmentation and exploratory analysis.

Example

Segmenting app users into casual, regular and power users by session behavior.

Exam tip

Clustering discovers groups; classification assigns known labels. Do not confuse them.
