chkdsk

A Windows command that checks a volume's file system and can repair errors and locate bad sectors.

Definition

chkdsk /f fixes file system errors, and chkdsk /r locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implying /f). If the volume is in use, the scan is scheduled for the next restart. On NTFS, chkdsk /scan runs an online scan.

Example

chkdsk C: /r schedules a full surface scan at the next reboot.

Exam tip

/f fixes errors; /r also finds bad sectors.
