Branch

A movable pointer to a commit that represents an independent line of development in Git.

Definition

Branches are cheap in Git, enabling isolated feature work, bug fixes, and experiments. The default branch is commonly main. New commits advance the currently checked-out branch.

Example

git switch -c feature/ospf-template creates and checks out a new branch.

Exam tip

A branch is just a pointer to a commit, not a copy of files.
