Boost Clock

The maximum frequency a CPU or GPU automatically reaches under load when power and thermal limits allow.

Definition

Technologies such as Intel Turbo Boost and AMD Precision Boost dynamically raise core frequency above the base clock when there is thermal and electrical headroom. Boost behavior depends on cooling quality, workload, and the number of active cores. Poor cooling causes boost clocks to collapse toward base speed.

Example

A laptop that benchmarks slower on battery or when hot is often losing boost headroom.

Exam tip

Low sustained performance with high temperatures points to cooling problems, not a defective CPU.
