Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)

A low-power Bluetooth variant using 40 2-MHz channels, widely used for IoT sensors and location beacons.

Definition

BLE uses three primary advertising channels (37, 38, 39) and 37 data channels, with GATT defining how data is exchanged. Bluetooth 5 added the 2M and long-range Coded PHYs, 5.1 added direction finding, and 6.0 added Channel Sounding for accurate distance measurement. Many enterprise APs include BLE radios for beacons and asset tracking.

Example

An AP's BLE radio broadcasts iBeacon frames for wayfinding.

Exam tip

BLE advertising uses channels 37, 38, and 39, placed to avoid Wi-Fi channels 1, 6, and 11.
