Binary Floor Control Protocol (BFCP)

A protocol used in SIP video calls to control which participant can send the presentation (content) stream.

Definition

BFCP (RFC 8855, originally RFC 4582) negotiates the floor for a second video stream so a participant can share slides alongside main video. It is negotiated in SDP and can run over UDP or TCP. If BFCP is not supported end to end, content may be sent in the main video channel or not at all.

Example

A laptop connected to a Room Kit sends slides as a BFCP-controlled content stream in a SIP call.

Exam tip

BFCP is the SIP equivalent of H.239 for dual-stream content sharing.
