Bidirectional Transceiver

A transceiver that sends and receives on a single fiber strand using two different wavelengths.

Definition

BiDi optics are deployed in matched pairs, such as 1310 nm transmit and 1550 nm receive on one end with the reverse on the other. They halve fiber usage, which is valuable where strands are scarce.

Example

Two buildings with only one spare strand are linked with a pair of 1G BiDi SFPs.

Exam tip

BiDi must be installed as complementary pairs; two identical BiDi modules will not link.
