BGP Message Types

BGP's message types: OPEN, UPDATE, KEEPALIVE, NOTIFICATION and ROUTE-REFRESH.

Definition

OPEN negotiates version, AS, hold time, router ID and capabilities. UPDATE advertises or withdraws prefixes with attributes, and KEEPALIVE (default every 60 seconds, hold time 180) maintains the session. NOTIFICATION reports an error and closes the session. ROUTE-REFRESH requests re-advertisement for soft resets.

Example

%BGP-3-NOTIFICATION: sent to neighbor 10.1.1.2 2/2 (peer in wrong AS)

Exam tip

Cisco default keepalive/hold timers are 60/180; Junos defaults hold time to 90 seconds.
