Authoritative Restore

An AD restore method that marks restored objects as authoritative so they replicate out and override newer copies on other DCs.

Definition

It is performed in Directory Services Restore Mode from a system state backup using ntdsutil, increasing the version number of selected objects. A non-authoritative restore, by contrast, lets the restored DC receive newer changes from replication partners.

Example

After an accidental OU deletion without Recycle Bin, an admin restores system state and marks the OU authoritative with ntdsutil.

Exam tip

Non-authoritative restore brings a DC back up to date; authoritative restore pushes restored objects to others.
