Attribute

A property that describes an entity, implemented as a column in a table.

Definition

Attributes can be simple or composite (Address = Street + City), single-valued or multivalued, and stored or derived (Age derived from BirthDate). Multivalued and composite attributes are usually decomposed during normalization.

Example

FirstName, LastName and BirthDate are attributes of the Customer entity.

Exam tip

A multivalued attribute stored in one column violates first normal form.
