Domain Integrity

The rule that every column value comes from the column's valid set of values, enforced by data types, CHECK, NOT NULL and DEFAULT.

Definition

Domain integrity defines what a valid value is for an attribute: its type, format, range and nullability. Databases enforce it with data types and constraints, while lookup tables and foreign keys can restrict values to a list.

Example

A CHECK (Rating BETWEEN 1 AND 5) constraint enforces domain integrity on a Rating column.

Exam tip

Map each integrity type to its control: entity = primary key, referential = foreign key, domain = data type, CHECK or NOT NULL.
