Antenna Diversity

Using multiple antennas to improve reception by selecting or combining the best signal.

Definition

Switched diversity, used in legacy 802.11a/b/g radios, samples multiple antennas and uses the one with the best signal. Modern MIMO radios use more advanced techniques such as maximal ratio combining. Diversity mitigates multipath fading.

Exam tip

Legacy diversity uses one antenna at a time; MIMO uses all simultaneously.
