Antenna Array

Multiple antenna elements arranged to create a controllable combined radiation pattern.

Definition

Adjusting the phase and amplitude of signals to each element of an array steers the combined beam. Arrays are used for beamforming, MIMO, and angle-of-arrival location. Massive MIMO cellular base stations use arrays with 64 or more elements.

Example

A Mist AP uses a multi-element BLE antenna array for location.

Exam tip

Phased arrays steer beams electronically without moving parts.
