AI Agent

An AI system that uses a model to pursue a goal autonomously by planning, calling tools and acting on results in a loop.

Definition

An agent receives a goal, reasons about next steps, invokes tools such as search, code execution or APIs, observes the results and iterates until done or stopped. Agents combine a model, instructions, tools, memory and guardrails. Autonomy increases capability but also risk, so permissions and human oversight must be scoped.

Example

A coding agent that reads a bug report, searches the repo, edits files and runs tests until they pass.

Exam tip

Agents decide their own steps; workflows follow predefined code paths.
