Address Family

A BGP (or other protocol) configuration context identifying a type of network layer information, such as IPv4 unicast or L2VPN EVPN.

Definition

Address families are identified by AFI and SAFI values and must be negotiated as capabilities in the OPEN message. Cisco IOS enables IPv4 unicast by default for neighbors unless no bgp default ipv4-unicast is configured.

Example

address-family ipv6 unicast / neighbor 2001:db8::2 activate

Exam tip

An IPv6 neighbor must be activated under address-family ipv6; defining it is not enough.
