Windows Hello for Business (WHfB)

Microsoft passwordless authentication using a TPM-protected key pair unlocked by a PIN or biometric.

Definition

Windows Hello for Business creates an asymmetric key or certificate bound to the device's TPM, unlocked locally by a PIN, fingerprint, or face. It is phishing-resistant MFA because the credential is device-bound and the PIN never leaves the device. Deployment models include cloud Kerberos trust, key trust, and certificate trust.

Example

Employees sign in to Entra-joined laptops with facial recognition, which unlocks a TPM-held private key.

Exam tip

The WHfB PIN is tied to the device's TPM, so it is stronger than a password even if short.
