Unskilled Attacker

A low-sophistication threat actor who relies on pre-built tools and exploits written by others.

Definition

Formerly called a script kiddie, an unskilled attacker has limited knowledge and resources and typically runs public exploit code, DDoS-for-hire services or automated scanners. Their attacks are usually opportunistic and noisy. Basic hygiene such as patching and filtering defeats most of their activity.

Example

A teenager running a downloaded DDoS tool against a game server is an unskilled attacker.

Exam tip

Security+ SY0-701 uses "unskilled attacker"; older material calls the same actor a script kiddie.
