Trust Boundary

A point where data or execution passes between components with different levels of trust.

Definition

Trust boundaries are where input must be validated, identities authenticated, and policies enforced. They are central to threat modeling data flow diagrams. Examples include the boundary between a browser and server, between tenants, or between a VPC and the internet.

Example

A threat model marks the API gateway as a trust boundary between internet clients and internal microservices.

Exam tip

Data crossing a trust boundary should be validated and authenticated.
