Top-of-Rack Switch (ToR)

A switch installed at the top of each server rack, connecting the rack's servers with short cables and uplinking to aggregation or spine switches.

Definition

ToR designs keep copper or DAC runs short inside the rack and use fiber uplinks. In spine-and-leaf fabrics the ToR switches are the leaves.

Example

Each rack has two ToR switches for redundant server connectivity.

Exam tip

ToR = switch per rack; EoR = switch per row.
