Three Ways of DevOps

The principles from The Phoenix Project and The DevOps Handbook: flow, feedback, and continual learning and experimentation.

Definition

The First Way optimizes the left-to-right flow of work from development to operations. The Second Way amplifies right-to-left feedback so problems are found and fixed quickly. The Third Way builds a culture of experimentation, risk-taking, and learning from failure.

Example

Adding automated test results and production alerts back into the developer's pull request is an example of the Second Way.

Exam tip

Match each Way to its theme: flow, feedback, learning; questions often describe a practice and ask which Way it supports.
