Three Pillars of Observability

The three primary telemetry types used for observability: metrics, logs, and traces.

Definition

Metrics are numeric time series that are cheap to store and good for alerting; logs are timestamped event records with detail; traces show a request's path across services. Profiles and events are sometimes added as additional signals.

Example

Metrics show error spikes, traces locate the slow service, and logs reveal the exception message.

Exam tip

Match the question's need to the signal: trend and alerting = metrics, request path = traces, detailed event context = logs.
