Tampering

Unauthorized modification of data, code or configuration in transit, at rest or in memory.

Definition

In STRIDE, tampering violates integrity. Examples include altering request parameters, modifying files or changing a build artifact. Mitigations include server-side validation, hashing and digital signatures, MACs, access controls and immutable logs.

Example

A user edits a hidden form field to change an order total before checkout.

Exam tip

Digital signatures and hashes address tampering; encryption alone does not guarantee integrity.
