System Security Plan (SSP)

Formal document describing a system's boundary, environment, security requirements, and how controls are implemented.

Definition

The SSP provides an overview of security requirements and describes controls in place or planned, roles, interconnections, and categorization. It is a central RMF artifact and is also required by NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC Level 2. It must be kept current as the system changes.

Example

A defense contractor's SSP explains how each of the 110 NIST SP 800-171 requirements is met for its CUI enclave.

Exam tip

A missing SSP is a fundamental gap for both RMF and CMMC assessments.
