Syslog

A standard for sending event log messages to a central collector, traditionally over UDP port 514.

Definition

Syslog messages include facility, severity, timestamp, host and message. TCP and TLS transport (port 6514 for TLS) provide reliability and security. Centralized logs feed SIEM systems.

Example

logging host 10.1.1.20 sends a router's logs to a syslog server.

Exam tip

Syslog = UDP 514; synchronize clocks with NTP so logs correlate.
