Synchronous Replication

Replication in which a write is acknowledged only after it is committed on both the primary and the replica.

Definition

Synchronous replication gives zero data loss (RPO of 0) between replicas, at the cost of added write latency, so it is typically used within a region or between nearby sites. Always On synchronous-commit replicas and RDS Multi-AZ standbys use it.

Exam tip

Zero data loss means synchronous replication; long distances usually force asynchronous replication.
