Supernetting

Combining multiple contiguous networks into one larger prefix with a shorter mask.

Definition

Supernetting, also called aggregation or summarization, reduces routing table size by advertising one route for several networks. The networks must be contiguous and aligned on the boundary of the summary prefix. Summarizing to the wrong boundary can include networks you do not own.

Example

192.168.0.0/24 through 192.168.3.0/24 summarize to 192.168.0.0/22.

Exam tip

To find the summary, count the matching leading bits common to all networks.
