Storm Control

A switch feature that limits broadcast, multicast or unknown unicast traffic on a port to a threshold.

Definition

Thresholds are set as a percentage of bandwidth, bits per second or packets per second. When exceeded, traffic is dropped, and the port can optionally be shut down or send an SNMP trap.

Example

storm-control broadcast level 5.00 ; storm-control action trap

Exam tip

Storm control mitigates broadcast storms but does not replace STP for loop prevention.
